Purrfect Love

Purrfect Love was the first 'Special Earth Angel' I attempted. 21 years ago when I met my husband John, I started being exposed to people who are physically challenged. John became a paraplegic in an accident when he was 21, and uses a wheel chair. Through John, I have met many people with different challenges. I have watched for years how some people are able to treat anyone with love and respect, and how others are frightened, and ignore, or point at, people with physical differences. I figure exposing people is the first step to learning to feel comfortable with something new. So I decided to use my dolls as a safe and gentle way to expose collectors to physical differences. The first Click to enlarge. doll was purposely done so that she was not seen as being different. I didn't want the Downs syndrome traits to be noticed right away. I wanted it to be a sort of an afterthought. I purposely gave her wings that were scraggily ... and a cat that was matted and rather shoddy looking. Then I dressed her in rich fabrics and gave her a gentle look ... hoping that few would notice right away that she had special needs. I wanted them to think that she looked like a princess ... perfect in every way ... and that it was the cat that needed help. It worked. Janet Marchese of Angel Keeper bought the doll. Janet sold it to a collector who did not realize at first the doll had Downs syndrome, but loved her even more once she learned that fact. The message taught that we are all perfect in God's eyes. We need to learn to really love and respect one another, because we are all different and special.
